Since Megan’s Law passed in 1996, all states in the USA were required to implement Registration and Community notification laws. In 2006 the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) was enacted, which provides minimum guidelines for registration of sex offenders in all states. A summary of the final national guidelines can be found here.
The offenses requiring registration differ from state to state, as do the terms of public disclosure and registration period. While most of these offenses are violent, in some states they include even things like public urination.
In the state of Florida, for example, there are over 85,000 registered sexual offenders. Around 68,000 of them committed their crimes against minors. All the offenses requiring registration in Florida and more information can be found on the Florida registry site FAQ. However, the registry also includes individuals guilty of less severe offenses, such as those who have moved in from another state where they were required to register.
The data used on this website is public data taken from the Florida Sexual Offender Registry. The images are of actual sexual offenders in the state of Florida. Your job is to guess which one of any given two sex offenders committed their crime against a minor.
